About

After living in Slovakia for two years, I developed a love for the culture, language, and cuisine of the Slovak people and their neighbors. Lacking the funds to travel back and forth when I miss living there, I needed to find a way to feel like I was in Slovakia.  Sure, Facebook and email help me keep in touch with my friends, but there is something to the smell of bryndza and bacon or potato bread that is extra special.

Not being able to find many ingredients used in Slovakia, nor recipes that capture the taste of their cuisine, I started making my own recipes. I frequently received calls from friends asking how to make different dishes without the Slovak ingredients, so I decided to write them all down. I usually start with something I find elsewhere online, in books, or from native Slovaks, and I improve the recipes and/or adapt them to an American kitchen.

If a recipe is largely derived from one source, I link that recipe to the source recipe in the body of the text. I often link to stores or products that work for me, but I do not and will not receive compensation for the endorsements. As you notice, this is an ad-free page and I want to keep it that way. Any endorsements or links reflect my personal opinion. Feel free to comment if you have any suggestions for changes.

If I mention ingredients that are not available in your area and you have a suggestion for a good local substitute or supplier, or if you know of any good authentic Slovak or Czech restaurants in your area, comment on my "Regional Information" page and I will add them as I see them.
